Houseboat & Marina Operations Supervisor

Mechanically minded, people person that likes to roll with the waves and multiple tasks.

Are you comfortable with boats, have any rv knowledge and a knack for trouble shooting? Do you like to move on your feet and thrive with a job that requires juggling and learning new tasks? Do you love sun, sand, water and sharing smiles with others who are there just for that?  

We’re looking for a person to train to be the next Houseboat & Marina Operations Supervisor. The position is highly “learn on the job” and requires a mechanical/fix it mind in addition to a hard-working, customer service-oriented personality.

We operate 10 charter houseboats, various motorized and non-motorized small water craft, a marina mercantile store, 80 moorage slips, mechanical services, 28-site campground and an inflatable waterpark on Lake Koocanusa, BC (One hour from Fernie BC). The diversity of the business means every staff member must be flexible and open to doing different tasks on demand. The short season also means the learning curve is steep, and adaptability is a necessary skill. We strive to provide high quality service and believe that a positive, keen attitude is key to achieving success. We are looking for full time Houseboat & Marina Operations Supervisor to help manage all houseboat operations and other marina/waterpark/rental/campground operations tasks.  

 

The position is seasonal (full-time) from May to October with some flexibility. Ideally, we would like a minimum 3 year commitment.  

 
Primary duties (Indepth training provided by previous supervisors): 

  • Provide above average customer service with sincerity and efficiency. 
  • The main role is to manage the arrival and departure of Houseboats during the operating season but also includes startup, closeup and supporting staff and management in marina, campground, and waterpark operations. Below is a more detailed description of the position. Note that the candidate does not necessarily have to do all of the listed jobs and can be discussed based on qualifications. 
  • In spring, work with management to take inventory of repairs and projects that need to be done in preparation for season start up. This includes houseboats (no mechanical repairs but can include plumbing, hot tubs, electrical, upgrades, carpentry etc) and docks. Make appropriate plans to schedule the above, working with other management, contractors and staff.  
  • Take inventory of campground repairs and projects including waterworks, septic, landscaping etc and work with staff/management to complete.  
  • Launch houseboats from our parking lot in the spring, in fall, pull houseboats and secure them on land (Full training provided). 
  • In June, prepare for startup by ensuring all houseboats are up to standard and operational. Includes working with dockhands to clean exteriors of boats, painting, and completing list of repairs as defined above.  
  • Work with the General Manager & staff to attach dock slips to their location and make sure docks are up to standard.  
  • During the season, the candidate will work with and manage staff to complete houseboat charters. This includes driving houseboats, fueling upon return, pumping septic, propane, cleaning the exterior of the houseboats, loading and unloading clients via golf carts etc. The role will mostly require the candidate to manage dockhand staff to complete the above tasks but no day goes without some involvement in doing some of the above themselves to get the job done. (The candidate will work with current supervisors until trained) 
  • Operate houseboats and sport boats daily.  
  • Assist in acquiring and sourcing products/tools as needed. 
  • Assist guests in a million different ways including providing info, getting them a lifejacket or lifting their suitcase from a cart to their boat.  

 

Preferred assets: 

  • Friendly outgoing personality, very comfortable with people and into creating a fun experience  
  • Safety oriented. Ideally the candidate has valid first aid levels 1 or 3 but training can be provided 
  • Boat/Houseboat experience highly desired including operation and basic mechanical (Boaters license required) Houseboat operation can be trained but confidence on water is required 
  • Mechanical and or RV knowledge and skills highly desired 
  • Carpentry/Tool skills highly desired 
  • Plumbing/Electrical experience desired but not required 
  • Loader/Bobcat experience desired but not required. Training can be provided 
  • Valid drivers license required 
  • Physically capable to be on your feet most of the day in the heat 
  • Capable of lifting 30-70 lbs  

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

  • Staff are required to stay on site at our marina during their shift. Accomodation at no charge can be arranged and options will be discussed once the interview process begins.  
  • 40-55 Hours per week. Start date of May to October 2020 (Exact start and end dates TBD and are somewhat flexible). 7-10 hours per day variable shifts based on boat schedules and current projects.

Driftwood Store Cashiers / Waterpark Attendants

The diversity of the business means every staff member has to be flexible and open to doing different tasks on demand. The short season also means the learning curve is steep, and adaptability is a skill any staff member benefits greatly from. We are looking for both full and part time cashiers and waterpark attendants to work in our store and supervise the inflatable waterpark. See description below.

We are located on Lake Koocanusa, 100 km from Cranbrook and 70 km from Fernie in beautiful South Eastern British Columbia.

JOB TITLE: Store Cashier and Waterpark Attendant

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Staff are required to stay on site at our marina during their shift in provided accommodation unless suitably close accommodation can be arranged. We have private cabin rooms with access to staff kitchen/lounge area and washrooms with showers. There is no charge for accommodation, but staff are required to maintain shared spaces. We welcome couples to apply as well 😉

20-45 Hours per week with a start date beginning in June/early July through September (4 months). 8 hours per day. Varied schedule. (If interested in working spring clean, the start date is earlier)

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Cash/till/retail experience required
  • Familiarity of cash in/out procedures an asset
  • Inventory management skills an asset
  • Scheduling/time management skills desired
  • Ability to work under supervision and take direction on cue as well as independently
  • Possess good physical condition, ability to swim very well. • Neat and clean in appearance and work habits
  • Ability to communicate with guests. Direct eye contact, start conversations.
  • First aid an asset
  • Food safe an asset
  • Drivers license an asset (Transportation to the site is not provided)
  • Ability to be very flexible and adaptive to busy-fast paced nature of business

KEY DUTIES:

Store:

Work at the marina store including some or all of the following:

  • Provide highest quality customer service
  • Operate till, debit/visa machine
  • Serve ice cream and coffee
  • Clean and maintain the store
  • Monitor products and inventory, restock when needed
  • Pump fuel and complete transactions
  • Complete rental/charter transactions and provide product pricing and information
  • Assist moorage clients and associated transactions
  • Conduct inspections of boats/products to ensure up to standard
  • Assist cleaning staff on busy in and out days including cleaning interior and exterior of boats.

Waterpark:

  • Open the waterpark kiosk including getting a float
  • Take payment for entrance fees, provide info and safety briefing
  • Supervise the waterpark ensuring people are following rules (Not required to life save)
  • Clean and maintain the waterpark kiosk
  • Interact with clients to inform them about the lake and our services
  • Clean the waterpark docks of garbage or belongings
  • Close the waterpark kiosk, stack chairs, haul garbage

Other duties as required can include anything and everything to make sure all our clients get the best out of their summer.

Marine Mechanic/Marine Mechanic in Training or equivalent

Sunshine Houseboat Vacations Ltd is always looking for keen, skilled, hardworking mechanics or mechanics in training to join our team. Sunshine Houseboats is located on Gold Bay, Lake Koocanusa in South Eastern, BC. We are the largest marina on the lake with over 80 boats moored and hundreds more visiting us. Ideally, we are seeking someone who has a good base of skills but we are willing to train the right people with the ability to learn. Training is ongoing and provided onsite.

Staff are required to stay onsite unless they live close. Position to start in early spring or early summer of 2020.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND PREFERRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Service and repair marine motors/engines
  • Have knowledge of some or all of the following product lines: Mercury, Mercruiser, Yamaha, Honda. Other brands an asset
  • Troubleshoot mechanical problems on any number of marine products including Jetskis, seadoos, outboard and inboard motors
  • Utilize diagnostic equipment and manuals where applicable
  • Be keen to be trained on new equipment including wake surf boats
  • Maintain and utilize the mechanical inventory
  • Operate any number of marine and construction equipment as needed including hauling of trailers
  • Launch and pull watercraft as needed
  • Work effectively with other staff and supervisors
  • Manage work spaces including ongoing cleaning, organizing
  • Detail boats and RVs
Dockhand

We are looking for full and part-time, keen, physically capable and courteous houseboat dockhands for our 2020 summer season. Dockhands are primarily responsible for maintaining the exterior of our watercraft, maintaining and cleaning docks, supplying propane and water, removing septic and garbage, moving boats, fueling, assisting clients with their supplies and luggage to and from their cars, and a multitude of small repairs and maintenance. All staff will also help maintain and attend the waterpark before and during operating hours.

JOB TITLE: Dockhand

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

• Dockhand staff are required to stay on site at our marina during their shift in provided accommodation (unless close accommodations are possible). We have private cabin rooms with access to staff kitchen/lounge area and washrooms with showers. We do not charge anything for accommodation, which is a huge perk! We welcome couples to apply as well as we have rooms to accommodate.

• 1-2 positions – 30-45 Hours per week. Start date of May or June to Sept (Exact start and end dates TBD). 8 hours per day on a 4-5 day shifts. No long weekends off.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

• Excellent communication skills required

• Customer service experience preferred

• Cleaning experience preferred

• Carpentry/trade skills an asset

• Boat operation experience highly desired

• Any marine, RV and/or mechanical knowledge an asset • Possess good health and physical condition (Loading and unloading)

• Cash/till experience an asset • Neat and clean in appearance and work habits • Valid Driver’s license required

• Valid Boating license an asset

• Valid propane ticket an asset (Ability to obtain on site)

• Adaptable personality and keen interest in learning

KEY DUTIES:

  • Help clients load and unload boats using golf carts
  • Clean hot tubs, all decks and exteriors of boats, and BBQs
  • Provide orientation to clients (not all staff will do this)
  • Maintain boats and rental equipment, provide product and pricing information
  • Work with the marina manager and head cleaner to ensure boats are ready for clients
  • Maintain garbage and recycling on boats and on land
  • Gas up boats (if needed complete sale in store using till and debit machine)
  • Remove septic waste from houseboats and in campground via pump system
  • Take garbage to dump
  • Maintain dock area cleanliness
  • Greet and assist clients in a helpful manner
  • Parking control
  • Move watercraft at our docks
  • Assess and repair waterpark as needed. Training provided.
  • Complete appropriate paperwork
  • Assist service & repair associates including using service boat to assist clients on the lake
  • Other duties as required
